China has invited members of the European Parliament to visit China more often as part of its efforts to strengthen ties with the European Union. Speaking at a regular press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized that contacts between China and the European Union at the level of legislative bodies are an important part of the relationship. Responding to questions about media reports that China plans to lift sanctions on five members of the European Parliament, Guo said, “China-EU legislative exchanges are an important part of bilateral relations. We hope that the two sides will get closer to each other, increase their communication, and members of the European Parliament will visit China more often to get to know our country better,” he said. In his statement, Guo said that China-EU relations are currently showing a “positive and improving momentum” and emphasized the importance of mutual understanding and contact for the continuation of this process. China’s desire to revive dialogue with the European Parliament is seen as a step towards a more balanced and constructive diplomatic relationship between the two sides.
