Construction of the gas interconnector between Serbia and North Macedonia will begin this year, with commissioning planned for early 2028.

According to the Balkan bureau of Report, this was announced by Serbia’s Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović-Handanović, following a meeting with Greece’s Minister of Environment and Energy, Stavros Papastavrou.

According to the minister, the global fuel price situation remains challenging. The authorities intend to keep price increases in check despite market pressures.

Regarding the diversification of gas supplies, the minister noted that Serbia plans to build two new gas interconnectors — with North Macedonia and Romania — which will enable additional gas supplies of more than 4 billion cubic meters per year.

The capacity of the interconnector with North Macedonia will be approximately 1.5 billion cubic meters. The project will give Serbia access to new gas supply routes, including via the TANAP pipeline and LNG terminals in Greece.

The ministers also emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation and coordination in the energy sector among Serbia, Greece, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria.

The development of renewable energy sources was also discussed during the meeting. Serbia aims to increase its installed capacity to 3.5 GW by 2030 and achieve a “green” energy share of 45%.
