The European Union’s energy ministers have reached an agreement to completely phase out natural gas imports from Russia by the end of 2027. Under the new framework, the signing of fresh gas contracts with Russia will be prohibited starting January 1, 2026, while existing agreements will be gradually terminated by early 2028. Currently, Russian gas accounts for approximately 13% of the EU’s total gas imports. Certain flexibilities will be granted to landlocked countries such as Hungary and Slovakia, while the decision is still subject to approval by the European Parliament.
