The European Parliament (EP) has approved the proposal to create a digital euro, thereby paving the way for the final stage of interinstitutional negotiations with a view to launching the currency in January 2029.

According to Report, this was reported by European Conservative.

“The digital euro was approved by 416 votes in favour and 169 against,” the article states.

The Council of the EU, the European Parliament and the European Commission must agree on the final parameters of the project by the end of 2026, after which the European Central Bank plans to launch limited testing in 2027, the article notes.

At present, electronic payments are processed via private international operators such as Visa, Mastercard and American Express, as well as digital services including PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay. The EU wants citizens and businesses to have access to a public European payment infrastructure, rather than relying solely on private operators.

Officials in Brussels state that the digital euro should strengthen the EU’s strategic autonomy and reduce dependence on US payment systems, whilst it will be used alongside cash rather than replacing it.

Core services are to be free of charge. People will be able to open accounts, hold and manage their funds. One key concept is that the digital euro could operate autonomously.
