South Korea’s Unification Ministry announced that Seoul and Washington are working on joint cooperation measures to promote peace on the Korean Peninsula and resume inter-Korean relations. These proposals will be presented at the upcoming summit between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and U.S. President Donald Trump later this month. Minister Chung Dong-young said the proposal on North Korea will be similar in approach to “MASGA” (Make America Shipbuilding Great Again), a phrase previously used in a trade negotiation with the U.S. to appeal to Trump’s interests.

Seoul reiterated its openness to dialogue with North Korea for the peaceful resolution of nuclear issues and expressed support for restarting U.S.–North Korea talks. The remarks came after U.S. State Department official Seth Bailey referenced a recent statement by Kim Yo-jong, the powerful sister of North Korea’s leader, in which she signaled openness to diplomacy with the U.S., provided it is not aimed at the country’s “complete denuclearization.”
