Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi informed U.S. President Donald Trump during their first summit on Tuesday that Japan intends to continue importing Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) “for the time being.” The U.S. has been urging Japan to halt Russian energy imports to reinforce sanctions against Moscow over its war in Ukraine. Takaichi, who took office on Oct. 21, cited the risk of domestic power shortages as a reason for the necessity of continuing the imports. In 2024, Russian LNG, sourced from the Sakhalin 2 project, accounted for 8.6% of Japan’s total LNG imports. Tokyo has faced criticism that these payments help fund Moscow’s war effort.
