Agriculture remains one of the main sectors of Kyrgyzstan’s economy, providing employment for a significant part of the population and playing an important role in shaping the country’s food security. At the same time, the agricultural sector is traditionally characterised by high dependence on natural and climatic conditions, access to water resources and the level of technological equipment. These factors determine the sustainability of the food system as a whole.

In this context, the results of agricultural production for 2025 allow us to trace current structural trends. Grain crops were harvested on an area of about 605,900 hectares, and the gross grain harvest, excluding legumes, rice and buckwheat, amounted to about 1.8 million tonnes after processing, which is lower than the previous year’s figures. The average yield was around 29 centners per hectare, reflecting the combined impact of weather conditions and the agricultural technologies used.

The decline in gross grain harvest is largely due to the dynamics of key crop production. In 2025, there was a noticeable decline in the production of wheat and barley, which traditionally form the basis of the domestic food balance. As these crops occupy a central place in the consumption structure, the decline increases the importance of other segments of agriculture and enhances the role of external sources of supply.
