Europe will face economic uncertainty if the tariff conflict with the US is not resolved.
According to Report, this was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a joint press conference with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala in Berlin.
“This trade policy between partners – between America and Europe – should strengthen the transatlantic market, not weaken it. Otherwise, this conflict will cause even more damage than it has already caused, especially for consumers on both sides of the Atlantic,’ he said. ‘Without such a solution [to the conflict], we risk facing economic uncertainty at a time when we need the opposite,” Merz added.
US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of 30% tariffs on all European exports from 1 August, in addition to the existing 10% tariffs on steel, aluminium and cars from the EU. In response, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that these tariffs would undermine transatlantic supply chains and called for efforts to reach an agreement before 1 August, regardless of the circumstances.
