The US is not ready to conclude a symmetrical agreement with the European Union (EU) on duties.
According to Report, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made this assertion at a joint press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in Berlin.
“It is clear that the Americans are not prepared to conclude a symmetrical agreement on duties. For our part, we offer open market access without duties, because we Europeans firmly believe that open markets are beneficial to all stakeholders, both those who import and those who export,” the German Chancellor stressed.
According to Merz’s assessment, the parties’ negotiations on duties are very intensive. ‘The European Commission is negotiating for all of Europe, and we need an agreement for all of Europe,’ – concluded the head of the German government.
Recall that US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of duties of 30% on all European exports from August 1, in addition to the already existing tariffs of 10% on steel, aluminium and cars from the EU. In response, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the duties would undermine transatlantic supply chains and called for an agreement to be reached before 1 August.
