Mexico and the European Union are set to sign a strategic partnership agreement and an interim trade agreement during the 8th bilateral summit, which will take place on 22 May in the country’s capital.

According to Report, this was stated in a communiqué from the Mexican Foreign Ministry following a telephone conversation between the country’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum, and the President of the European Council, António Costa.

“It is expected that one of the main outcomes of the summit will be the signing of a Strategic Partnership Agreement in the political, economic and cooperation spheres between Mexico and the European Union, as well as an interim trade agreement,” the document notes.

The statement emphasises that the new agreement will update and deepen the existing framework for political, economic and cooperation relations established 25 years ago.

The EU will be represented at the summit by European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Their working programme in Mexico will begin on 21 May.
