A decision has been taken to provisionally close negotiations with Montenegro on Chapter 8 (‘Competition Policy’) and Chapter 29 (‘Customs Union’) as part of its accession process to the European Union (EU).

According to Report’s Balkan bureau, the decision was taken today in Brussels during the 28th meeting of the Conference on Montenegro’s accession to the EU.

“I am proud that, during Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the EU, the first Intergovernmental Conference with Montenegro took place and two further chapters of the negotiations were provisionally closed. With 18 chapters now provisionally closed, Montenegro has completed more than half of the accession process and remains at the forefront on the path to membership of the European Union.

EU enlargement is a geopolitical necessity for ensuring stability, security and democratic reforms in Europe. This issue will remain one of the key priorities of our Presidency,” said Thomas Byrne, Ireland’s Minister of State for European Affairs and Defence, speaking on behalf of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU.

It is emphasised that, if necessary, the European Union may revisit these chapters in the future.
