Myanmar’s military leader General Min Aung Hlaing met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders met during a defense forum in Moscow to discuss bilateral relations and regional security issues. This meeting demonstrates the continued strategic cooperation between Myanmar’s military leadership and Russia.

Min Aung Hlaing has been isolated internationally following his military coup in Myanmar in February 2021. However, Russia remains one of the few countries to support Myanmar’s military leadership. The two countries have a long-standing cooperation in defense and arms trade. The meeting with Putin is interpreted as part of the Myanmar junta’s search for legitimacy in the international arena. It is also an indicator of Russia’s efforts to increase its influence in the Asia-Pacific region.
