Russia’s Foreign Ministry reported that it lodged a “strong protest” with the Japanese Embassy in Moscow over the “Joint Exercise 2025” military drills held from October 20-31. The drills covered Japan’s entire territory, including areas on Hokkaido Island “in geographical proximity to Russia.” The ministry stated that “such provocative military activity poses a potential threat to the security of Russia’s Far Eastern borders.”
Furthermore, Russia expressed concern that the Typhon missile system, capable of launching medium-range missiles, remains deployed at the US military base in Iwakuni following the earlier “Resolute Dragon 25” drills (Sept 11-25) and has “not yet been removed” from Japan. The ministry added that Russia “reserves the right to take the necessary retaliatory measures” to ensure an adequate level of security.
