Former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is to take up a new role as head of the new ‘North-South’ commission, which will be responsible for shaping German policy on aid to developing countries.

According to Report, citing German media, the decision to establish the commission was taken by the federal government at a meeting in Berlin.

Scholz will co-chair the commission alongside former Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla. By the end of 2028, the commission is due to present a report with recommendations on the future direction of support for these countries.

This is driven by a desire to develop a new framework for Germany’s cooperation with developing countries in light of current global political developments and growing budgetary constraints.

According to the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the commission will operate independently. It will comprise representatives from political circles, academia, the private sector, trade unions, civil society and international organisations from both the Global South and the Global North. In total, the commission will have around 20 members.
