The European Commission (EC) uses funding to exert pressure on countries that disagree with its policies, including Hungary.
According to Report, this was stated by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Péter Szijjártó to RIA Novosti.
‘The European Commission is playing dirty — they usually attach so-called “conditions” to payments, which gives them the opportunity to impose financial sanctions against countries or governments that they do not like politically. This is what is happening with Hungary now,’ the diplomat said.
According to Szijjártó, Hungary is under ‘financial sanctions’ for pursuing a patriotic, conservative policy based on national interests.
‘The pressure from Brussels began immediately after we came to power in 2010. Then it became clear: we are not part of the liberal mainstream,’ the minister said.
He also noted that the Hungarian authorities are acting not in the interests of the EC, but in the interests of their country and its citizens.
Last week, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that his country might consider leaving the European Union if the situation reached a point of no return.
Earlier, the European Commission said that Hungary had become isolated in the EU because of its ties with Russia.
