The European Commission is calling on the Serbian leadership to suspend the implementation of a recently adopted package of judicial and legal laws.

According to the Balkan Bureau Report, this was stated by European Commission spokesman Guillaume Mercier in a comment to the N1 news platform.

He said that the changes made to key laws in the field of justice in Serbia are a serious step backwards on the path to European Union (EU) membership. “Today, Commissioner Michael McGrath held a meeting with the Serbian Minister of Justice. The Commissioner clearly outlined our concerns and expectations regarding further steps. We call on the Serbian leadership to find legal ways to suspend the implementation of the changes and urgently review the adopted amendments to address our concerns. These changes must comply with the principles of a transparent and inclusive consultation process involving all stakeholders, including the European Commission and the Venice Commission,” Mercier said. The European Commission representative also expressed regret that the changes to key judicial and legal laws had been signed by the Serbian president.
