Joint work between Europe and the US within the North Atlantic Alliance should create the so-called ‘NATO 3.0’ – a new version of NATO that would be based on partnership rather than dependence.
According to Report, citing Ukrainian media, this was stated by US Deputy Secretary of Defence Elbridge Colby before the start of a ministerial meeting at NATO headquarters.
‘In 2025, thanks to the leadership of President [Donald Trump] and Secretary General [Mark Rutte], there was a rethinking and a genuine commitment to the idea that Europe should lead NATO’s conventional defence,’ Colby said.
He noted that, in a sense, this process “is a real return to “NATO 1.0” – a serious Alliance focused on defence and deterrence.
‘We have a really solid foundation for working together as partners, but turning NATO into a kind of “NATO 3.0”, based on partnership rather than dependency, is a real return to what NATO was originally intended to be,’ Elbridge Colby added.
