US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence that Keir Starmer will soon resign as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

“Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He has handled two very important issues extremely poorly – IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (Open up the North Sea oil!). I wish him all the best!”, the post reads.

Earlier, Sky News, citing sources, reported that the UK Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, had told Starmer in a conversation that he should resign. Another influential Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, shares this view.

The Observer also suggested that Starmer might announce his resignation as early as 22 June. According to the publication, if he does not do so, he will be publicly asked to step down at the Cabinet meeting on 23 June.

Talk of Starmer’s resignation intensified after his party colleague, Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, won the by-election to the House of Commons (the lower house) of the British Parliament on 18 June. This victory gave Burnham the opportunity to challenge Starmer’s leadership, which has lost the support of Labour’s left wing.

A political crisis erupted in the UK following the local government elections held on 7 May. As a result, the Labour Party lost control of the Welsh Assembly for the first time.
