U.S. President Donald Trump has doubled tariffs on Indian goods to as high as 50%, citing previous sanctions tied to India’s Russian oil purchases. The new tariffs hit products like garments, jewelry, footwear, furniture, and chemicals, threatening small exporters and jobs, especially in Gujarat. India’s government pledged financial aid and urged exporters to diversify toward markets such as China, Latin America, and the Middle East. Goods already in transit before the deadline are exempt until Sept. 17, and some sectors like steel, aluminum, and cars remain under separate tariff rules. Trade talks failed after five rounds, raising tensions between the two countries. The hikes could undermine India’s role as an alternative to China in manufacturing. Despite the trade standoff, both nations reaffirmed security cooperation and their commitment to the Quad partnership.
