Turkmenistan and the United Nations (UN) have discussed cooperation in the fields of transport, energy and environmental protection

According to Trend, citing the press service of the Government of Turkmenistan, the discussion took place during a meeting between the country’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Vefa Hajiyev, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres following the presentation of credentials.

The parties also considered issues relating to the strengthening of peace and security, as well as the development of instruments of preventive diplomacy and mediation.

António Guterres emphasised the importance of Turkmenistan’s policy of permanent neutrality as a key factor in regional stability at the crossroads of global geopolitical and geo-economic interests, and also noted the role of the UN Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia, located in Ashgabat.

The UN also expressed its gratitude to Turkmenistan for its contribution to the socio-economic recovery of Afghanistan and its integration into major regional transport and energy projects.

For reference, the United Nations in Turkmenistan acts as a development partner, supporting national priorities aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, within the framework of the UN Framework Programme for Cooperation on Sustainable Development (2021–2025/2026–2030). The country team, led by the UN Resident Coordinator, works with the government on reforms in the health, education, economic and social sectors. Key areas of focus include governance geared towards economic growth and the delivery of quality services. The main UN agencies involved are UNDP, WHO, UNICEF and UNHCR.
