On 28 August, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Transport, Ilkhom Makhkamov, held talks with Nicholas Ho Lik-Chi, Head of the ‘Belt and Road’ Office of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, during which the parties discussed the development of cooperation in the transport and infrastructure sectors.
One of the main topics of the meeting was the involvement of Hong Kong banks in financing the construction of the ‘Tashkent–Samarkand’ toll motorway. Nicholas Ho Lik-Chi noted that this project is a priority for the Hong Kong side amongst the projects in the overall portfolio.
In addition, the parties discussed the current state of cooperation between Uzbekistan and China in the fields of transport, freight transport and the implementation of infrastructure projects.
Particular attention was paid to the agreements reached during the visit of the Uzbek delegation, led by the Prime Minister, to Hong Kong in May 2026. The participants reviewed the next steps for implementing the agreements reached.
The parties also exchanged views on the prospects for signing an Intergovernmental Agreement on Air Services between Uzbekistan and Hong Kong, including the possibility of establishing direct scheduled air services.
Following the talks, the parties reaffirmed their interest in further expanding cooperation and agreed to continue working on promising transport and infrastructure projects.
