Chinese President Xi Jinping, during a meeting with US President Donald Trump, stated they must ensure the “giant ship of China-US relations” continues “steady sailing forward.” Xi noted that since Trump’s reelection, the two leaders have remained in close contact, speaking on the phone three times, and that relations have remained “stable on the whole” under their “joint guidance.” He said that the recent trade consultations in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where the two sides reached a “basic consensus,” provided the necessary conditions for their current meeting. Acknowledging that frictions are “normal” given their different national conditions, Xi remarked, “You and I are at the helm,” and stressed they must “stay the right course” despite challenges.
