The Trump administration announced that it will begin implementing a reduced tariff of 15% on Japanese automobiles this week, down from the current 27.5%, as part of a bilateral trade deal with Japan. A similar deal was reached with South Korea in July, but its implementation remains uncertain as negotiations continue. Upon arriving in the U.S., South Korean Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo emphasized Seoul’s efforts to ensure the tariff reduction applies to Korean cars as soon as possible. The U.S. is South Korea’s largest auto export market, accounting for $34.7 billion (49.1%) of its total car exports last year.
