Bessent: US expected to reduce tariffs on China within a year at the latest

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that a significant reduction of the 20% tariffs on Chinese goods could take months or even a year, as Washington needs to see tangible progress in tackling the fentanyl issue. He stressed that China is the source of precursors entering the U.S. via Mexico and Canada, which caused the deaths of 100,000–200,000 Americans last year. The final decision will be made by President Donald Trump. The next U.S.–China trade meeting is expected within 2–3 months, while no date has been set for a Trump–Xi Jinping meeting.
