With 18,000 km of mainland coastline and 3 million km² of maritime jurisdiction, China is a major maritime nation. In recent years, its marine economy has grown rapidly in sectors such as fisheries, shipbuilding, cruise tourism, deep-sea mining, and genetic resources. In 2024, China’s gross ocean product exceeded 10 trillion yuan (about USD 1.4 trillion) for the first time, more than double the 2012 figure. In shipbuilding, China led the world in 2024 across completion, new orders, and order backlog, with over 50% global market share and over 70% in new orders. In the first half of 2025, the marine economy grew 5.8% to 5.1 trillion yuan.

For the 2026–2030 period, priorities include innovation-driven growth, industrial upgrading, human–sea harmony, and international cooperation. Key focus areas are marine energy, seawater desalination, marine pharmaceuticals, and advanced technology breakthroughs. China has signed marine cooperation agreements with over 50 countries and organizations, set up joint research centers with nine nations, and trained more than 6,000 young scholars from developing countries. It aims to strengthen global ocean governance and promote sustainable maritime development.
