The UN Security Council has received a request from Cambodia to hold an emergency meeting on the escalation of the border conflict with Thailand and is holding consultations.

According to Report, this was announced to journalists at the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the UN, which is chairing the Security Council in July.

‘The presidency has received a request from Cambodia to hold an emergency meeting of the Council. We are holding consultations, but no meeting has been scheduled yet,’ the mission’s press service said.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet sent a letter to UN Security Council President Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, calling for an urgent meeting amid escalating fighting on the border with Thailand.

Report says CNN shared this info.

Manet accused the Thai armed forces of ‘unjustified, deliberate and targeted attacks on Cambodian positions along the border areas,’ calling them a violation of international law.

On the morning of 24 July, an armed clash occurred on the disputed border between Thailand and Cambodia (involving two border areas with ancient Khmer architectural monuments — the Preah Vihear and Ta Moan Thom temples — ed.). The military forces of both sides accused each other of firing the first shots. Later, the Thai government closed the border crossings with Cambodia. Thailand reported 12 deaths.
