High-level officials responsible for foreign affairs and defense from China and India are meeting face-to-face in China this week, which is seen as an important opportunity to further the recent recovery in relations between the two Asian giants.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Indian National Security Advisor and Special Representative for China-India Border Issues Ajit Doval in Beijing on Monday. During the meeting, it was emphasized that the two countries should increase cooperation at different levels and in various fields and support each other in multilateral platforms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Doval stated that India is willing to strengthen coordination with China in multilateral areas and expressed their full support for China, which currently holds the SCO presidency, to hold a successful summit. According to Indian media, Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will also visit China to attend the SCO Defense Ministers’ Meeting to be held in Qingdao on Wednesday. At the 23rd Special Representatives Meeting held in Beijing in December, the two countries reached an important six-point agreement on the border issue. In the latest meeting, Wang and Doval also emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the border regions.
