Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized that China and the European Union (EU) must remain committed to cooperation and resolutely defend multilateralism. The statement came during a meeting with EU and member state ambassadors in Beijing on Wednesday.
Wang Yi noted that China and the EU are constructive forces that can provide stability and predictability during a period of change and turmoil in the world. Stressing that both sides should respect each other’s core interests and sensitivities, Wang said China would never allow Taiwan to break away from the motherland and expressed China’s expectation that the EU would adhere to the “one China” principle and oppose any “Taiwan independence” moves. Wang noted that there are no territorial disputes, geopolitical tensions, or conflicts over fundamental interests between China and the EU, and said that the parties should view each other as partners and prioritize cooperation in bilateral relations.
