Chinese envoy calls for int’l efforts to defuse tension in eastern DR Congo

China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Sun Lei, urged the international community to help de-escalate violence in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and restore peace. He stressed that attacks on civilians are unacceptable and called on all armed groups to respect international humanitarian law, cease violence, and engage in disarmament. China reaffirmed its support for the DRC’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Sun highlighted the positive momentum from DRC-Rwanda engagement and called for commitments toward a political solution. He praised Qatar’s mediation with the M23 Movement and expressed hope for a lasting peace deal from the Doha talks. Sun also emphasized strengthening the role of the African Union and regional mechanisms, urging the international community to act impartially and responsibly. He reaffirmed China’s readiness to continue constructive efforts for regional peace.
