The European Union and Iceland have signed a security and defense partnership agreement.
According to Report, the news was announced by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas on social media platform X.
The document was signed by Kaja Kallas and Iceland’s Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir.
“The EU and Iceland are close friends. We share common security and common challenges. The security and defense partnership agreement signed today between the EU and Iceland takes our relationship to a new level,” she wrote.
Kallas also added that the agreement will deepen cooperation in areas of crucial importance to the security of EU and Irish citizens, ranging from maritime security to the protection of critical infrastructure. “This is a win for both the EU and Iceland,” she emphasized.
The EU press release noted that in the current volatile security environment, this important milestone gives new momentum to the already deep relationship between the bloc’s member states and Iceland, built on the European Economic Area Agreement.
“The new partnership creates a framework for deepening exchanges on regional security issues and strengthening engagement in areas such as support for Ukraine, Arctic affairs and maritime security, cybersecurity, new and disruptive technologies, economic security, and the climate-security nexus. This cooperation will be underpinned by a number of dialogue and consultation mechanisms to facilitate information sharing as well as to ensure coordination and oversight, including an annual dedicated Security and Defence Dialogue,” the statement noted.
