On 16 June, the European Parliament approved the legislation required to fulfil the European Union’s obligations under the trade agreement with the United States, reached in July 2025.

According to Report’s European bureau in Strasbourg, MEPs voted in a plenary session in favour of a package of measures, including the removal of tariffs on US manufactured goods and the granting of preferential access to the European market for a range of agricultural products from the US.

It should be noted that the EU had very little time left (until 4 July) to secure parliamentary approval of the deal; otherwise, the US side had threatened to revoke the terms of the agreement and impose new, high tariffs on European goods.

According to the agreed text, the tariff preferences will remain in force until 31 December 2029, unless the parties decide to extend them.

The legislation provides for the possibility of suspending tariff concessions should the US maintain tariffs above 15 per cent on certain types of steel and aluminium products from the EU by the end of 2026. A safeguard mechanism is also provided for in the event that an increase in imports from the US causes serious damage to European industry or agriculture.

For the documents to enter into force, they must be formally approved by the Council of the EU. The legislation will come into force following its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
