Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv.
“It is an honour for me to be here with President Zelenskyy on the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. We exchanged views on the situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) and the ongoing work to assist Ukraine in restoring its energy infrastructure, including new power units at the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant and the refurbishment of the New Safe Confinement at Chernobyl,” the post states.
According to Grossi, the IAEA remains committed to supporting nuclear safety, particularly in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy reported that the meeting with Grossi focused on the issue of de-occupying the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Enerhodar.
“Russia has carried out drone strikes on the Chernobyl NPP, as well as attacks using various types of heavy weaponry on power units, administrative buildings and other facilities at the ZNPP. Currently, all six of its power units are out of operation. It is important to remember the threat that Russian shelling poses to global nuclear safety,” the Ukrainian leader noted on his Telegram channel.
Zelenskyy and Grossi also took part in the opening of a new permanent exhibition at the National Museum ‘Chernobyl’ entitled ‘Chernobyl: People and Meanings’.
According to him, during the meeting with Grossi, the importance of continued support from partners for the security of Ukraine’s nuclear infrastructure was emphasised.
