German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced plans on Thursday at the congress of the German Chambers of Commerce and Industry to build the world’s first power plant based on nuclear fusion in the country.

According to Report, the head of the German government noted that Germany would need to increase electricity generation to stabilise and, where possible, reduce energy tariffs.

“We intend to build the world’s first fusion power plant in Germany. At the Hannover Messe two weeks ago, we were able to see for ourselves that this is by no means a utopian dream, but a perfectly achievable goal, and that Germany is at the forefront of research in this field,” Merz emphasised.

According to him, on 13 May the federal government will approve a strategy for the development of power stations and “thereby launch tender procedures for the construction of new gas-fired thermal power stations in the country, designed to provide the base load for the power grid”.

‘To achieve this goal, we are counting on new gas-fired power stations, which will complement the expansion of renewable energy, the development of which we do not question in any way,’ said Merz.
