S. Korean, U.S. top diplomats discuss alliance advancement ahead of Lee-Trump summit

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met in Washington to discuss advancing the bilateral alliance, just days before the planned summit between Presidents Lee Jae Myung and Donald Trump. The upcoming summit is expected to focus on modernizing the alliance, enhancing deterrence against China, strengthening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, burden-sharing, revitalizing U.S. manufacturing, and ensuring fair trade relations. Both sides also underscored the importance of trilateral cooperation with Japan. The U.S.-ROK alliance was highlighted as the linchpin of peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and across the Indo-Pacific for over seven decades.
