The meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and US President Donald Trump at the G7 Summit in Canada did not produce the expected results. The two sides were unable to resolve their fundamental differences on high customs duties affecting the automotive and metal sectors. Statements made after the meeting indicate that a comprehensive agreement is unlikely in the short term.

During the bilateral meeting on Monday, which lasted approximately 30 minutes, Ishiba called for a review of the high tariffs imposed on Japan. However, speaking to the press after the meeting, Ishiba said, “There are still some points on which we disagree. We must protect our national interests,” indicating that no comprehensive agreement had been reached and that negotiations would continue. This was the second meeting between the leaders following their first face-to-face contact in Washington in February. During the meeting, Ishiba reiterated Japan’s intention to increase its investment in the US and emphasized the importance of mutually beneficial relations. However, Trump did not make any commitments to reduce tariffs on Japanese automobiles and other products.
