Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba announced that he will meet with US President Donald Trump at the G7 Summit to be held in Canada next week. The decision to hold the meeting was made following a 20-minute phone call between the two leaders on June 12.

In a statement following the meeting, Ishiba said that Japan would insist on its demand that the US lift its high tariffs on Japanese products. The Prime Minister said that he aims to accelerate negotiations at the ministerial level between the two countries in order to reach an agreement that is beneficial to both sides. “When we meet at the G7 Summit, we will continue our discussions on further deepening our bilateral cooperation,” he said.
