Japanese Defense Minister General Nakatani and his US counterpart Pete Hegseth agreed to accelerate efforts to strengthen the alliance’s deterrent in the face of China’s growing assertiveness in the region and confirmed progress in upgrading command frameworks for smoother coordination between the two countries’ forces. The agreement, reached during Hegseth’s first visit to Japan as Pentagon chief, underscored how strong bilateral ties remain even under US President Donald Trump, whose demands for increased defense spending have raised concerns about straining the longstanding alliance. Nakatani told a joint press conference with Hegseth after their talks in Tokyo that they “made a decision to move forward with a sense of urgency” on initiatives to strengthen the alliance’s deterrence and response capabilities, noting the increasingly serious and complex security environment.
