Kazakhstan expects to increase the throughput capacity of the Middle Corridor to 20 million tonnes per year.
According to Report, citing the press office of the Kazakhstani leader, the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, made this announcement at the first ‘Central Asia – Republic of Korea’ summit.
He said that, against the backdrop of changes in global supply chains, Central Asia’s role as a vital link between East and West is growing.
Tokayev noted that Kazakhstan has set itself the target of increasing the total volume of transit shipments through its territory to 100 million tonnes per year. In this regard, he said, the country is paying particular attention to the development of the Middle Corridor (the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, TMTM).
“Over the past six years, freight volumes along this corridor (TMTM – ed.) have increased fivefold. In the foreseeable future, we intend to increase its capacity to 20 million tonnes per year. In our view, it is possible to integrate the Middle Corridor with the TRIPP transport initiative (the Trump Route – ed.). Within this framework, South Korea carries out multimodal transport to Central Asia via the Kazakhstan-China logistics terminal at the port of Lianyungang. “I believe it is possible to combine the potential of these routes and establish an end-to-end transport and logistics chain from Korea through Central Asia to Europe,” said Tokayev.
