For the first time in its history as an independent nation, Kyrgyzstan has secured a seat as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, reports Trend.

During the vote in the UN General Assembly, the republic competed with the Philippines for one of the seats on the Security Council. Following four rounds of voting, Kyrgyzstan managed to secure the necessary majority – at least two-thirds of the General Assembly’s member states. In the final round, 142 states supported the country’s candidacy.

From 1 January 2027, Austria, Zimbabwe, Portugal and Trinidad and Tobago will also join the ranks of the new non-permanent members of the Security Council. They will replace Greece, Denmark, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia, whose terms on the Security Council will end on 31 December 2026.
