South Korean President Lee Jae Myung will attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York later this month, marking his first appearance at the global forum since taking office in June. On September 23, he is scheduled to deliver an address during the 80th session of the General Assembly. According to presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung, South Korea will use this opportunity to share its experience of overcoming and recovering from a democratic crisis, while also presenting its vision and policies on major global issues, including the Korean Peninsula.
In September, South Korea assumed the rotating presidency of the U.N. Security Council for the fifth time since joining the United Nations in 1991, and for the first time in 15 months. As part of this role, President Lee will preside over an open debate on September 24 focusing on the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) for global peace and security. This will mark the first time a South Korean president has chaired such a session. The debate aims to address the potential risks posed by rapid AI advancements to international security and explore ways to enhance global cooperation in responding to these challenges.
Lee’s active participation at both the General Assembly and the Security Council is expected to reaffirm South Korea’s status as a “trusted partner” in the international community and strengthen the country’s leadership role on the global diplomatic stage.
