German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has cancelled a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump that had been scheduled for Wednesday.

According to Report, citing The Guardian, the decision was taken a few hours after Trump publicly welcomed the success of the far-right party ‘Alternative for Germany’ (AfD) in regional elections.

A spokesperson for Merz declined to give a reason for cancelling the call, but emphasised that it was not linked to changes in the Chancellor’s schedule.

According to AFP, Merz’s press secretary also refrained from commenting directly on Trump’s statements and declined to answer a question about a possible link between the cancellation of the call and the US President’s remarks.

Furthermore, the Chancellor’s spokesperson noted that Merz had repeatedly spoken out against “interference in or commentary on domestic political affairs”, particularly when it comes to elections.
