On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement, China and France issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to addressing climate change and their support for the development of multilateralism.
The statement follows a meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Noel Barrot in Beijing. The statement emphasized the need to find appropriate solutions to the fundamental challenges of our time within a multilateral framework. Analysts said the joint statement signaled China and Europe’s cooperation in tackling global challenges and underlined the stance against protectionism. Barrot’s two-day visit, which began on Thursday, is his first to China as France’s foreign minister. He will travel to Shanghai on Friday, where he will hold meetings with local officials and business people. In a separate meeting with Barrot, Chinese Premier Li Qiang stressed that the two countries’ strengthening of communication and cooperation will add more stability and certainty to bilateral and global development. Barrot said France opposes trade wars and wants to advocate multilateralism with China and jointly tackle global challenges such as climate change.
