Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon will pay a state visit to Uzbekistan on 26–27 March. During the visit, he will hold the first meeting of the Supreme Intergovernmental Council together with the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, and sign a package of documents which are expected to elevate relations between the two countries to the level of a full-fledged alliance.

This is an important step in the development of bilateral ties. Following the signing of the Treaty on Alliance Relations in April 2024 in Dushanbe and its entry into force in March 2025, the parties have already resolved almost all remaining border issues. In particular, in March 2025 in Khujand, the presidents of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan signed an agreement on the tripoint where the borders of the three countries meet, which allowed for the final settlement of the last disputed sections.

The economy remains the main driver of rapprochement. In 2025, trade turnover between the countries, according to Tajikistan, reached $718.3 million – a 22.5% increase compared to 2024. By broader estimates, it has already approached $912 million (a 3.8-fold increase since 2017). In January of this year, the figures rose by a further 81.5%.

Uzbekistan supplies machinery, fertilisers and petroleum products to Tajikistan, whilst Tajikistan exports mainly coal – almost all of its export volume last year was destined for Uzbekistan.

There are already 357 enterprises with Tajik capital operating in Uzbekistan – a third more than a year ago. Both sides have set a target of increasing bilateral trade to $2 billion in the coming years.
