Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has instructed the government to submit proposals on assessing the impact of the digital economy on GDP.
As reported by Trend on Monday, citing Akorda, Tokayev made this statement during the second meeting of the Council for the Development of Artificial Intelligence.
The President noted that the concept of the ‘digital economy’ has not yet been definitively defined, and the existing methodology is fragmentary in nature.
“When we are told that the target GDP growth rate of five per cent has been achieved, we must clearly distinguish to what extent this was driven by the real sector of the economy and to what extent it resulted from the introduction of innovations. The lack of significant achievements is masked by aggregate indicators, which creates the illusion of efficiency and prevents an objective assessment of the real contribution of digitalisation and artificial intelligence to economic growth. The Government, together with the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms, should put forward proposals on assessing the impact of the digital economy on GDP,” said the Head of State.
The President noted that the latest data from leading global research institutes point to a rapidly widening gap between developed and developing economies.
