Former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen is visiting Japan, marking her first trip there since leaving office in May 2024. Her office described the visit as personal, with no official schedule. China sharply criticized the visit; Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian urged Japan to adhere to the “One China” principle and avoid sending signals to Taiwan independence supporters. The visit comes amid strengthened informal ties between Taiwan and Japan and rising concerns over China’s claims on Taiwan. During her presidency, Tsai cultivated close relations with Japan, notably with former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. This trip follows a July visit by Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, which had already strained Sino-Japanese relations.
