Sinan Selen, a German official of Turkish origin, will be appointed as the new head of Germany’s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), the country’s domestic intelligence and counterintelligence agency. Currently serving as deputy head since 2019, Selen will replace Thomas Haldenwang, who stepped down in 2023 to run for parliament. Founded 75 years ago, the BfV employs about 4,200 staff and is tasked with counterintelligence and monitoring threats to Germany’s democratic order. Born in Istanbul in 1972, Selen moved to Germany at age four, studied law at the University of Cologne, and worked in the Interior Ministry and Federal Criminal Police Office.
