European Union member states expect Péter Magyar, leader of the opposition party ‘Tisza’ which won Hungary’s parliamentary elections, to fulfil a list of 27 requirements to unlock European funding amounting to around €35 billion.

According to Report, the British newspaper the Financial Times (FT) reports this, citing European diplomats.

Mátyás, the publication’s sources indicate, must agree to these conditions if he intends to repair Budapest’s strained relations with Brussels.

“We have significant leverage,” the FT quotes an EU representative as saying. “Pressure is being exerted on him (Mátyás – ed.), and, in my view, he is keen to achieve results as soon as possible.”

It is noted that the EU has already held initial talks with the new Hungarian leadership, during which new measures were presented to the new cabinet.

According to the Financial Times, these demands include anti-corruption checks, as well as a review of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s decisions that were found to breach EU rules – ranging from the treatment of asylum seekers to ensuring academic freedom in higher education and curricula.
